Hello, I’m Karen Waller, the founder of Primary Steps Tutoring.

I am a mother of two children and live in Torquay, Devon, close to several local primary schools, and I have always had a deep passion for teaching and helping children achieve their full potential. My tutoring sessions take place in a fully resourced classroom, designed to create a calm, engaging and supportive learning environment.

I am a fully qualified primary school teacher with over 20 years classroom experience in Years 2–6. Throughout my career, I have been a subject leader for PE, a mentor for Early Career Teachers, and a member of the school leadership team, leading a team of six teachers across two year groups.

My Approach

Every child is unique, and so are their learning needs. My sessions are carefully tailored to each individual to build confidence, fill learning gaps, and stretch understanding where appropriate.

Classrooms can be busy places, and some children benefit from a quieter, more focused setting to help them thrive. Whether your child:

  • needs a boost in confidence,
  • has gaps in their learning, or
  • is preparing for the 11+ entrance exams or Year 6 SATs,

I will provide engaging, personalised support to help them reach their goals.

All tutoring sessions last 1 hour, and will cover both Maths and English (reading, spelling, and grammar)
